Dolphin: 2004 - 2005[]

In the aftermath of the first Brainiac Invasion, a DEO team was sent to retrieve classified materials from the wreckage of a US naval ship lost in the battles off the coast of Bjorland. The team was led by Rick Flag, but had a number of other strange members in its ranks, including Animal Man. While searching the wreckage, the team came across a beautiful teenage girl with aquatic features living among the debris. The girl attacked the team members wearing diving equipment but did not assault Animal Man. In fact, the seemingly feral girl appeared transfixed by Animal Man's appearance. As she was so distracted by studying the metahuman hero's features, Rick Flag was able to hit her with a powerful sedative.

When the girl recovered, she was restrained aboard the team's ship, and many of her aquatic features disappeared after leaving the water. The feral girl had no memory of her past, her name, or even any human language. Though she spoke no human language, Animal Man convinced her she was safe among the crew, the girl agreed not to provoke further hostilities and explained she had only attacked the others as she did not recognize they were the same as her.

On the return voyage, the girl explained she had only lived on the wreckage of the ship after finding it a safe refuge from hostile sea creatures. She explained she had been alone with no memories for some time, but only seen beings like her from a distance and never underwater — which was why Animal Man had interested her. The girl claimed she had been alone for approximately three months (having seen three full moons' passing above the water's surface) and the crew deduced she had been orphaned during the Brainiac Invasion and likely had her meta-gene activated as a survival mechanism. However, with no other details forthcoming, the crew could not discover her true identity and so 'Dolphin' stuck.

When the crew returned to land, Dolphin was taken into custody of the DEO. Bones was interested in training her as an underwater operative to investigate Atlantis. However, upon learning about Atlantis, a nation consisting of underwater people like her, Dolphin decided to return to the sea to join Atlantis.

Dolphin: 2005 - 2007[]

Dolphin chose a poor time to seek out Atlantis. She found an Atlantean convoy and followed it to Poseidonis, only to soon learn that Atlantis was in the midst of a civil war. The nation's more charitable programs were not in effect and few Atlanteans had the time to deal with the inquisitive amnesiac girl who knew nothing of their culture or traditions. Assumed to be a mutant commoner, Dolphin ended up living in the poorest districts of Poseidonis where she began to learn the basics of Atlantean life, language, and the people.

As she matured into a young woman, Dolphin became infatuated with King Orin. She wanted nothing more than to meet him. With the ongoing war, she figured her best chance to meet him was on dry land where he helped the Americans as the hero known as Aquaman. As Dolphin did not know about the JLA's monthly fan autograph and photo op events, her plan for getting close to Aquaman began with going to Star City. She showed up on the Baker family farm wearing little more than a bikini in December. Buddy had to convince his neighbors that "Dolly" was his cousin from Europe (and Ellen needed convincing that she wasn't his "side-chick").

Dolphin wanted Buddy to introduce her to Aquaman. Flattered she presumed he had to be close with the JLA and not wanting to disappoint her, Buddy agreed to help. Dolphin joined Animal Man on patrol, hoping to run into Green Arrow so he could make the proper introductions. For months, they had no luck. During this time, Dolphin stayed the guest of the Baker family and became an unofficial sidekick of Animal Man. Buddy loved the help as Star City was still in its post-Undertaking days. Ellen made use of her house guest, having "Dolly" help her with the kids.

When they did finally meet Aquaman, Dolphin was surprisingly more interested in his young squire... and he just happened to be in an argument with his girlfriend.[1]

Resources[]

  • Metahuman Physiology: Dolphin is human with an activated meta-gene that has altered her genetics. This has granted her many abilities and mutations, most of which are quite similar to those of the Atlantean sub-race of humanity.
    • Amphibious Nature: Dolphin can breathe both water and air. When underwater, Dolphin breathes by extracting oxygen from the water through the gills on her neck. These gills will disappear when not required. Similarly, Dolphin can conceal her other aquatic features.
    • Bioluminescence: Dolphin's hair absorbs and stores light. At will, Dolphin can cause her hair to glow to illuminate dark areas or release the stored light in a sudden bright burst to temporarily blind hostile creatures or persons.
    • Energy Projection: When directly exposed to sunlight, moonlight, or another significant source of light. Dolphin can channel the light through her body release that energy from the palms of her hand in the form of a powerful concussive blast. The use of this ability tends to wear her out.
    • Cold Resistance Dolphin's bloodstream is filled with an amino acid that keeps her body from freezing in the ocean depths. Her own temperature is naturally high.
    • Enhanced Durability: Dolphin's body is conditioned to survive the depths. This makes her remarkably more resilient that the average human.
    • Enhanced Nightvision: Dolphin's ability to see in the murky depths of the ocean gives her exceptional night vision while on land. She has excellent close range vision and she can see particularly well in low light.
    • Enhanced Reflexes: Dolphin has much quicker reaction times than humans.
    • Enhanced Senses: Dolphin possesses several senses much more acute than those found among ordinary humans. Her tactile perception is particularly potent. She can detect movement in her environment by sensing vibrations in the water, air, or ground. She can detect certain scents underwater for miles and track persons she has met by their smell alone.
    • Enhanced Stamina: Dolphin does not tire quickly, particularly underwater. She can swim at Mach 4 over very short distances.
    • Enhanced Strength: Dolphin can lift approximately 12 tons. This classified by ARGUS as being in the Class V Enhanced Strength category.
    • Enhanced Swimming: Dolphin can swim at supersonic speeds, maintaining cruising speeds between Mach 1 and Mac 2 with little effort for several hours. She can be seen as shimmering distortion when she is moving.
    • Invisibility: Dolphin's body can bend visible light, allowing her to blend into the environment to such a degree as to appear primarily invisible to the naked eye. She can be seen as a shimmering distortion when she is moving.
    • Photosynthesis: Dolphin can survive without food or water for several weeks if she has access to sunlight or other ample lighting.
    • Telepathy: Dolphin can communicate telepathically with other minds in her close proximity. She does not possess the cerebral node most Atlanteans possess, which causes her transmissions to be received differently. Some Atlanteans find this sensation to be irritating, and others find it strangely alluring. Her telepathy also has a the passive effect of creating a sort of "siren song" effect among a certain percentage of persons, causing Dolphin to pop up in their idle thoughts, often of a sexual nature. This effect can linger for days for those particularly sensitive to it.
  • Martial Arts: Dolphin is naturally adept combatant despite little formal combat training.

Weaknesses[]

  • Fish out of Water: Dolphin is still unfamiliar with many human and Atlantean society customs. She is prone to faux pas and verbal gaffes.
  • Language: Dolphin still struggles with spoken words after years of being mute.
  • Loved Ones: Dolphin's ferality returns when her mate or offspring are in danger.
  • Memory Loss: Dolphin suffers from amnesia and can still be forgetful at times.
