Ronnie Raymond: 1987 - 2004[]

Ronnie was born with the name of Ronald Build-the-Fire, a native of the Navajo Nation. When Ronnie was still a young boy, his mother left the large reservation to escape her abusive husband and took her son with her. Of course, Ronnie’s father continued to pursue them, requiring them to move often and without warning. When Ronnie was four, his mother married a special investigator for the Opal City District Attorney’s office that she believed would be able to protect her and her son from her husband and a year after that, Ronnie’s stepfather, Edward Raymond (brother of Roy Raymond from TV's Impossible… but True) adopted Ronnie and gave the boy his last name. The name change did little to deter Ronnie’s original father however and eventually, he caught up with Ronnie’s mother Elaine and the resulting argument turned sour. Edward Raymond came home from work to find Ronnie hiding in a broom closet, but Elaine would not be found for two years, face down in a dried river bed a hundred miles outside of Opal City. It took another three years to track down Ronnie’s biological father, prosecute him, and send the despicable human being off to prison.

By eleven, Ronnie was able to begin the process of moving past his troubled origins. Edward and Raymond had become rather close as father and son… until two years later when Edward met a floozy cocktail waitress by the name of Donna whose husband was out of the picture and her only child had moved off to college. While Edward and Donna tried to involve Ronnie in their relationship as much as possible, Ronnie was not interested, Ronnie saw Donna as a threat to his father’s attention at best and a poor replacement for his mother at worst. In order to give him better excuses to stay out of the house as much as possible, Ronnie broadened his horizons with a lot of hobbies, sports, and extracurricular activities, including a science camp which included a visit to the new STAR Labs Particle Accelerator opening in Central City. Ronnie had no idea how much a single field trip would change his life.[1]

Notes[]

  • Ronnie's address and birth date are nods to his first comic book appearance: Firestorm, the Nuclear Man #1, in March 1978, by Gerry Conway and Al Milgrom.
  • In Earth-27, Felicity Smoak is Ronnie's stepsister; unlike the comics where she is Ronnie's stepmother.
